FAQ'S

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment takes about 60 minutes and includes:

1. Health & Vision History – We review your medical background, current medications, and any vision concerns.

2. Pre-Test Screening – Digital measurements of eye pressure, corneal curvature, and retinal images help us spot early signs of disease.

3. Comprehensive Eye Exam – We will refine your prescription, evaluate eye-teamwork, and checks for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

4. Personalized Consultation – We explain results in plain language, answer questions, and discuss treatment or eyewear options.

5. Optical Styling (Optional) – Our opticians will guide you through frame and lens choices or perform a contact-lens fitting if requested.

Are contact lenses safe to wear?

Yes—when prescribed and cared for properly. Modern lenses are made from highly breathable materials that keep eyes comfortable and oxygenated.

Recommendations:

1. Wear only lenses approved by your eye-care professional.

2. Stick to the recommended replacement schedule (daily, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.).

3. Wash and dry hands before handling lenses.

4. Use fresh solution every time and replace your case every three months.

5. Never sleep in lenses unless they’re specifically designed for overnight wear.

If you adhere to these habits the risk of infection is extremely low.

What are the signs that I need an optometrist?

Schedule an exam if you experience:

1. Blurry vision at any distance

2. Frequent headaches or eye strain, especially after screen time

3. Difficulty seeing at night or halos around lights

4. Redness, dryness, itching, or excessive tearing

5. Sudden flashes, floaters, or loss of peripheral vision

6. Diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of eye disease

Even without symptoms, routine exams (every 1–2 years) can catch issues long before they affect sight!

Do you accept insurance for eye exams?

Absolutely. Northlake Eye Care is in-network with most major vision and medical plans. We verify your benefits ahead of time, explain any out-of-pocket costs, and submit claims on your behalf. Unsure about coverage? Just call our front desk with your plan details and we’ll check for you.

How can I maintain good eye health?

1. Schedule Regular Exams – Early detection is the best protection.

2. Practice the 20-20-20 Rule – Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds to reduce digital eye strain.

3. Protect Against UV – Wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors.

4. Eat an Eye-Smart Diet – Leafy greens, colorful fruits, omega-3–rich fish, and plenty of water support ocular health.

5. Quit Smoking – Smoking increases the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

6. Manage Chronic Conditions – Keep blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol in check.

7. Use Proper Lighting & Ergonomics – Position screens slightly below eye level and reduce glare.

Can children wear contact lenses?

Yes—many children can safely and comfortably wear contact lenses, provided they (and their parents) are committed to proper hygiene and follow-up care.

How do I choose the right glasses?

1. Start With Your Prescription

–Single-vision, multifocal, or progressive lenses determine frame depth and lens material

options.

–High prescriptions often benefit from high-index lenses and smaller, rounder frames to

minimize thickness.

2. Match Frame Shape to Face Shape

3. Consider Lifestyle & Activities

–All-day digital work: Blue-light or anti-fatigue lenses.

–Outdoor & sports: Impact-resistant polycarbonate/trivex lenses, wraparound styles, polarized

sun clips.

–Kids & active adults: Spring hinges, flexible materials, scratch-resistant coatings.

–Choose the Right Material: Acetate (Lightweight, vibrant colors, hypoallergenic),

Metal (titanium, stainless steel), Sleek, durable, corrosion-resistant.
